The UFC has a new Lightheavy Weight Champion, but the old lightheavy weight champion and his trainer don't seem to think so. Last Saturday night fan favorite and 5th ranked Forrest Griffin eked out a very close decision and took Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's Lightheavy weight belt. Rampage clearly took the first round with a clean one punch knock down of Griffin and Forrest took the second round with a leg kick that almost crippled Jackson, but after the kick Rampage wisely chose to spend the remainder of the round on the ground where his leg could rest. Rounds three and four were toss ups depending on if a judge liked the power of Jackson's shots or the volume of Forrest's strikes. The last round seemed to go to Griffin on work ethic, but Rampage did land a couple good shots. A decision either way would have been acceptable and Griffin got the nod.
In the ring Rampage graciously admitted defeat, but after his really rampaging trainer got his ear Quinton did a one eighty turn in attitude at the post fight press conference and claimed that he was robbed. Poor Quinton --- and he actually was showing a little class there for a minute before he was talked out of it. His team then filed an official complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission which seems like unnecessary whining considering that the decision won't be overturned and a rematch was already on the way. Griffin summed up the situation in his post fight in ring interview when he said, "I think we have to do that again and that sucks for me 'cause that guy hits f--king hard!"
In other fights that evening Canadian slugger Patrick Cote won a close but well earned decision over veteran BJJ specialist Ricardo "Big Dog" Almeda and Joe "Daddy" Stevenson pulled out a beautiful guillotine choke on Gleison Tibau, who was whacking the tar out of Daddy up until the match ending technique. Tuf veteran and accomplished wrestler Josh Koscheck proved that it will take more than winning to get the fans to forgive his behavior on the reality show as he was booed soundly for his unquestionable decision win over likable Chris "Lights Out" Lytle and "The Young Assassin" Melvin Gulliard showed just how dangerous he can be when he's completely focused with his one minute destruction of Dennis Siver.
It was yet another enjoyable show from Dana White and the UFC crew and I'm looking forward to their next events on July 19th and Aug. 9th.
Good Night -- Good Fight
